Department of Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology
An introduction of the Department
The Department of Pediatric Surgery has been represented in the Center for Surgery since 1972. After the establishment, the clinic was under Professor med. habil. Romans, who quickly expanded it to a pediatric surgical center. After taking over the management by Professor dr. med. Habil Wagemann In 1988, who set the course for the development of a modern structure and equipment that was adapted to current requirements for pediatric surgery in unified Germany.
The work area now has a total of 16 beds available, which includes the main areas of inpatient and outpatient care. Inpatient care includes the diagnostic and surgical care of premature babies, newborns and infants with congenital anomalies and the acute care of children undergoing emergency surgery. Preterm infants undergo neonatal surgery to save the smallest patient from exposure to a difficult birth. This risk minimization is part of the overall concept within the Perinatal Center, which is headed by the University Women's Hospital (Prof. Dr. med., Dr. h.c., Serban-Dan Costa) and the University Children's Hospital.
The major focus of our work is treating children who have been in accidents with conservative or serious injuries. This is done in close cooperation with the Department of Traumatology (Prof. Dr. Felix Walcher) also for severely injured children in the context of BG treatment. The interdisciplinary pursuit by a trauma team in the Central Emergency Room / Rescue Center represents the standard in the supraregional trauma center (ÜTZ) in the Traumanetzwerk (Trauma Network) Sachsen-Anhalt.
In addition, children with special congenital or acquired surgical-related diseases are treated, including removal of tumors in cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of the University Children's Hospital (Prof. Dr. med. P. Vorwerk).
For outpatient care, pediatric surgery special consultation is the first point of contact. This is offered daily which includes diagnostics and outpatient operations are performed on common pediatric surgical diseases, e.g. Phimosis and material removal after osteosynthesis. Other focal points are the treatment of hemangiomas by LASER or CRYO therapy or surgical removal or diagnosis and treatment of vascular malformations as well as the adapted treatment of different types of hypospadias or the treatment of juvenile bone cysts.
When treating children, care and precatution are taken so that the diagnosis and the therapy are children-friendly. For this purpose, the special training and equipment in Pediatric Radiology is to be mentioned, as an essential foundation of the department.
There is a close cooperation with the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology. The common case presentations and the cooperation with the paediatricians are conducted by the working group "Pediatric Urology at the Magdeburg University Hospital". Children's endoscopic examinations and therapeutic measures can often spare an operation or provide important information for the best surgical procedure.
Mothers and fathers can visit and care for their children without restrictions. For special pediatric surgical indications, mothers are included. As part of its profile, the AB trains students in the form of lectures and internships. The station is located in house 10 (Children's Hospital) on the 2nd level. The ambulance can be reached in house 60 A.
One of the essential features is not only the independent medical conditions and surgical procedures but also the treatment provided by special pediatric anesthesiologists. In particular, we ensure and adapt anesthesia according to age and other particulars for pain elimination and have the technical facilities to treat infants as well. (anaesthesiology in pediatric surgery).
